How Many GB Will GTA 6 Be? File Size and Storage Requirements

Last checked: September 25, 2026

GTA 6’s size in GB has not been officially announced for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar and the current console store listings do not publish a download size, installed size or minimum free-space requirement. A PC edition also remains unannounced, so there are no official GTA 6 PC storage requirements.

That leaves no verified answer yet to “how much space does GTA 6 take?” Several numbers have circulated online, but they refer to very different things - from an unverified PlayStation screenshot to a development-data archive and an old Xbox placeholder download.

Storage takeaway: There is no confirmed amount of space you need to clear for GTA 6 yet. Check your available storage, but there is little reason to delete games or buy additional storage solely to match a rumored figure.

What we actually know about GTA 6’s file size

Confirmed

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar also says that preloading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026. We therefore know when players will be able to start downloading the game, but not how large that download will be.

Reported or leaked

Recent claims include an alleged PlayStation screen showing a storage requirement and an Xbox screenshot circulated by a parody account. Neither provides a verified final GTA 6 file size.

We examine both claims below.

Still unknown

Rockstar has not confirmed:

  • the GTA 6 download size,
  • the final installed size,
  • the minimum free-space requirement,
  • separate PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S sizes,
  • or any PC storage specification.

Older Rockstar games can provide context, but they cannot reliably predict how many GB GTA 6 will require.

How many GB will GTA 6 be on PS5?

The public PlayStation Store listing does not currently show a storage requirement for GTA 6.

That is important when looking at screenshots circulating on social media. Until Sony or Rockstar publishes the same information through an official listing or announcement, a screenshot should not be treated as confirmation.

When an official figure does appear, pay attention to how it is labeled. Required space, download size and installed size can describe different measurements even though all three are expressed in gigabytes.

How many GB will GTA 6 be on Xbox Series X and Series S?

Microsoft lists GTA 6 for both Xbox Series X and Series S, but the public listing does not provide separate installation sizes.

There is also no verified basis yet for assuming that the Series S version will necessarily be smaller than the Series X version.

An older Xbox download has caused some confusion. In June 2025, players were able to download a roughly 328 MB GTA 6 placeholder package from Xbox servers.

Contemporary reporting identified it as a placeholder rather than the game itself or a real preload. A package that small was clearly not GTA 6 and tells us nothing about the final Xbox installation size.

How many GB will GTA 6 be on PC?

Rockstar’s current platform information lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A GTA 6 PC version has not been officially announced.

As a result, there is no official GTA 6 PC storage requirement, SSD requirement or download size to report.

If Rockstar later announces a PC edition, its requirements will need to be assessed separately. A console file size would not automatically tell us how much storage the PC version requires.

Download size, install size and required free space are not the same

When people search for the “GTA 6 file size,” they can be asking about several different measurements.

Download size is the amount of data transferred when downloading a package. This matters most for download times and internet data limits.

Installed size is the amount of storage occupied by the game after installation on a particular platform and version.

Required free space is the amount of available storage a platform or publisher says is needed to install or update the game. It does not necessarily equal either the download size or the final installed size.

Update-related space can also complicate things. Updates may download compressed data and replace existing files rather than simply adding their full download size to the game.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation provides a useful example of how this works: downloaded data can be compressed, and some updates temporarily create replacement files before removing older versions. This does not confirm a GTA 6 Steam release; it simply illustrates why download size and final storage use can differ.

A 20 GB patch, for example, does not necessarily make a 150 GB installation become 170 GB.

Are the GTA 6 file-size leaks reliable?

There is currently no leak that provides a verified final GTA 6 storage requirement.

The alleged 244.86 GB PlayStation requirement

On September 21, 2026, IBTimes UK reported on a Reddit post from September 19 that claimed to show a PlayStation interface displaying “244.86 GB required” for GTA 6.

IBTimes said it could not independently verify the screenshot, and the 244.86 GB figure does not appear on Sony’s public GTA 6 store listing or Rockstar’s current GTA 6 pages.

For now, the correct description is therefore unverified.

Even if the screenshot eventually proved authentic, its wording would matter. A screen showing “244.86 GB required” would appear to describe a free-space requirement. That is not necessarily the same as a 244.86 GB download or a final 244.86 GB installation.

The 676.7 GB Xbox screenshot

A post from @GameJoker_ on June 23, 2026 presented an alleged Xbox listing that showed GTA 6 at approximately 676.7 GB.

Insider Gaming examined the image the following day and identified the account as a self-described parody source.

The screenshot also contained an obvious warning sign: it referenced installation on Xbox One, even though Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 for that platform.

There is no credible evidence that GTA 6 requires 676.7 GB. The image should be treated as a parody-sourced fake rather than a genuine Microsoft storage disclosure.

The 192 GB development-content report

On September 18, 2026, Insider Gaming reported that roughly 192 GB of Rockstar development material connected with the company’s 2022 data breach had begun circulating more widely.

The collection included a substantial amount of GTA V development material as well as some content connected with GTA 6.

It was not a finished retail GTA 6 build.

The size of that archive therefore tells us nothing useful about how much storage GTA 6 will require on PS5, Xbox or a potential future PC release.

Seeing the same file-size number repeated across Reddit, X and news sites does not make it independently verified. What matters is where the number originated and what it actually measures.

What GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 can tell us

Previous Rockstar releases are useful for understanding the general scale of modern game storage requirements, but they should not be treated as formulas for GTA 6.

The figures below are published PC storage requirements, checked on September 25, 2026. They are not measured console installation sizes and they are not GTA 6 predictions.

Dark GTA 6 styled comparison table showing published PC storage requirements for GTA V Enhanced, GTA V Legacy and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Published PC storage requirements for recent Rockstar titles: GTA V Enhanced requires 105 GB, GTA V Legacy 125 GB, and Red Dead Redemption 2 lists 150 GB of available storage.

GTA V itself shows why simple predictions can be misleading. Rockstar lists a 105 GB disk requirement for GTA V Enhanced but 125 GB for GTA V Legacy.

A newer edition does not automatically need more storage.

The same applies to GTA 6. Its larger world, newer technology or graphical improvements do not give us a reliable formula for converting those changes into gigabytes.

Map size is especially misleading here. Even if one game world is geographically larger than another, that does not mean its installation has to grow by the same percentage.

Can we realistically estimate GTA 6’s storage requirements?

At the moment, there is not enough verified information to produce a useful platform-specific estimate.

Rockstar has not disclosed the size of the retail package, and the leaked or rumored numbers currently circulating online do not provide a trustworthy starting point.

You can leave extra storage available as a precaution, but that should not be presented as GTA 6’s estimated file size.

Until Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft publishes an actual requirement, any specific figure or range remains speculation.

How much space should you clear before GTA 6 launches?

There is no confirmed amount you need to clear yet.

For now, the best approach is to check how much storage you already have available, identify games you would be comfortable removing if necessary, and wait for the official GTA 6 requirement before making larger changes.

Check available space, not the capacity printed on the box

On PS5, open:

Settings → Storage

To review individual installed games and applications:

Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps

This shows how much usable storage is currently available rather than the total capacity advertised for the console.

On Xbox Series X or Series S, check the free space available on the drive where you intend to install GTA 6.

Once the official requirement appears, compare it with the available space on that specific drive.

Check what your existing expansion storage supports

PS5 distinguishes between storing PS5 games and playing them.

PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but they must be moved back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played.

A compatible M.2 SSD can be used to download, install and play PS5 games directly, provided it meets Sony’s requirements.

For Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft’s Storage Expansion Cards are designed to provide additional storage with performance comparable to the console’s internal SSD.

None of this means you need to buy extra storage specifically for GTA 6. Wait for the official requirement and compare it with the storage you already have.

Plan for the download even when buying a boxed copy

One unusual detail about GTA 6 is already confirmed.

Rockstar’s current edition FAQ says that the boxed version contains a digital download code rather than a game disc.

Rockstar expects boxed copies to become available for retailer shipping and pickup from November 12, 2026, allowing buyers to use the same preload period as digital customers.

Buying a boxed copy therefore does not eliminate the need to download GTA 6.

The preload announcement also does not tell us how large that download will be or whether an additional update will be required before launch.

When preloading begins, check the figures displayed by your own console and pay attention to whether the platform is showing download size, required storage or installed size.

FAQ

Will GTA 6 Ultimate Edition take more space than Standard Edition?

There is no verified storage comparison between the editions.

Official listings describe differences in included content, but they do not currently publish final installed sizes for each version.

Some edition-specific content may affect storage use, but there is not enough information yet to say whether the difference will be measurable or significant.

Does the preload date confirm the day-one patch size?

No.

Rockstar has confirmed when preloading begins, but it has not published the size of a day-one update.

A preload also does not guarantee that no additional download will be required before or after launch.

Is GTA 6 really over 200 GB?

There is currently no verified evidence that GTA 6’s final installation will exceed 200 GB.

The most widely discussed number above that threshold is the alleged 244.86 GB PlayStation requirement, but the screenshot remains unverified and the figure does not appear on Sony’s public store listing or Rockstar’s official GTA 6 pages.

Could GTA 6 be 300 GB?

It is technically possible for modern games to require very large amounts of storage, but Rockstar has not announced anything close to a 300 GB requirement for GTA 6.

Claims that the game will be 300 GB or more should therefore be treated as speculation unless they are supported by an official Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft source.

How much storage should I have ready for GTA 6?

There is no official number yet.

Rather than targeting a rumored figure, check your current free space and wait for the platform-specific requirement. Once Sony, Microsoft or Rockstar publishes it, you can decide whether you need to delete games, move data or add more storage.
