GTA 6 vs GTA 5: Graphics, Map, Gameplay, and the Biggest Differences
The biggest GTA 6 vs GTA 5 differences are already clear. GTA 6 moves the series from Los Santos and Blaine County to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, replaces GTA 5’s trio of protagonists with Jason and Lucia, and introduces new systems around vehicles, weapons, police identification and everyday activities.
Rockstar’s August 2026 Extended Look and a wave of developer interviews have also revealed far more about how GTA 6 actually plays. The game remains scheduled for November 19, 2026, so this is still a pre-release comparison rather than a review. We can compare what Rockstar has shown and what named developers have described, but final performance and the full experience will have to wait until launch.

What we can compare right now
Confirmed by Rockstar
Rockstar’s official materials establish GTA 6’s release date, setting, protagonists and announced platforms. The company also describes the current release as a single-player experience.
Shown in official footage
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, released on August 27, 2026, was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. It gives us the clearest official look so far at GTA 6’s environments, animation, combat, activities and moment-to-moment interactions.
Described by developers
Interviews with Rockstar North developers add details that the footage alone cannot explain, including fuel and charging, vehicle theft, weapon limits, police identification, the Criminal Profile system and restrictions on character switching.
These are stronger than rumors or anonymous leaks, but some details may still change before release.
Still unknown
Rockstar has not published an exact map area in square miles or square kilometers, a complete list of final console graphics modes or a detailed plan for GTA 6 multiplayer.
Those gaps matter when comparing GTA 6 with a game that has been available and tested for more than a decade.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 differences at a glance
Comparison baseline: Unless stated otherwise, “GTA 5” refers to the native PS5 version, with Fidelity Mode used as the visual baseline. Performance and Performance RT are discussed separately. GTA 5 Enhanced on PC is a different version and should not be treated as interchangeable with the PS5 release.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5 graphics: what has actually changed?
Lighting, reflections and materials
A GTA 6 vs GTA 5 graphics comparison needs more context than simply asking whether GTA 6 has ray tracing.

The modern PS5 version of GTA 5 already supports ray tracing in selected graphics modes. GTA 5 Enhanced on PC goes further, with ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections.
The difference visible in GTA 6 is therefore less about checking a single technical feature off a list and more about how Rockstar combines lighting, materials, animation and environmental detail.
The Extended Look shows interiors where light spreads naturally through rooms, reflective wet streets, shopfronts, vehicle surfaces and a large amount of small environmental detail. Analysis of the footage has also highlighted the way materials respond differently across skin, clothing, glass, metal and water.
Because the GTA 6 footage is a curated pre-release presentation rather than a controlled benchmark, exact rendering comparisons should wait for the final game. Visually, however, the jump from GTA 5’s current console version is already noticeable.
Characters, animation and environmental detail
Character animation is one of the easiest differences to see.

The Extended Look shows hair reacting to character movement and wind, clothing folding around bodies and more detailed facial and body animation. Lucia’s jacket at the firing range, for example, visibly changes shape as she moves her arms.
Dazed’s GTA 6 feature highlighted another scene with Jason and Lucia at sunset, where details such as sweat, condensation on bottles and background crowds all contribute to the overall presentation.
Those details matter because GTA 6’s visual improvement is not limited to sharper textures or more polygons. Characters, clothing, props, lighting and background activity are designed to work together in the same scene.

The real test will be how consistently that level of detail holds up during normal gameplay rather than carefully selected showcase moments.
Crowds, traffic, weather and water
GTA 5’s PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release already improved population and traffic variety, vegetation density, lighting, water reflections and other environmental effects. Comparing GTA 6 only with the original 2013 version would therefore exaggerate the generational difference.
Even against the newer GTA 5 release, GTA 6 appears considerably denser.
Beach scenes, nightlife sequences and busy streets show a wider range of body types, outfits and activities. Rockstar has also discussed population density varying by location and time of day.
That does not mean every pedestrian has a fully simulated daily routine, but the footage and developer comments point toward a busier and more reactive environment than GTA 5’s Los Santos.
Water is also likely to matter more because Leonida includes coastal areas, islands, wetlands and boating locations. The Extended Look includes swimming, boats, kayaking and underwater activity, although the final depth of those systems remains to be tested.
What the footage cannot tell us yet
Rockstar states that the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That makes it a much stronger comparison source than a cinematic trailer, but it still does not answer every technical question.
We do not yet have final information on native rendering resolution, every console graphics mode or performance across demanding open-world situations.
A video uploaded in 4K also does not automatically mean the game itself renders every scene at native 4K.
For now, the footage supports one straightforward conclusion: GTA 6 looks substantially more detailed than GTA 5’s current console version, but final image-quality and performance comparisons will require the released game.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 map: setting, size, and world design
GTA 5 combines the dense city of Los Santos with Blaine County’s desert, mountains, towns and countryside.

GTA 6 returns to Vice City but expands the setting across the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar has officially introduced several major regions:
- Vice City
- Leonida Keys
- Grassrivers
- Port Gellhorn
- Ambrosia
- Mount Kalaga
These are different parts of the wider setting rather than six equivalent cities.
Official screenshots and footage show tropical islands, wetlands, industrial areas, forests, smaller settlements, beaches and a much larger urban environment around Vice City.
Is GTA 6’s map bigger than GTA 5?
According to accounts from Rockstar’s August 2026 preview sessions, yes, and by a substantial margin.
TGG, who visited Rockstar North and watched several hours of GTA 6 gameplay, reported that Rockstar North development lead Rob Nelson described GTA 6’s complete map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Nelson also reportedly said that Vice City itself is around twice the size of Los Santos.
Flow Games independently reported the Vice City comparison after its own Rockstar North visit. Its coverage also quotes Nelson saying that the amount of built-up area outside Vice City is dramatically larger than the developed areas outside Los Santos.
These comparisons are useful, but they are not the same thing as an official map measurement. Rockstar has not published the full playable area in square miles or square kilometers, and the developer comparisons were given verbally during preview sessions rather than through a technical specification.
That distinction is important because “total map,” “playable area,” “land area” and “city area” can produce very different numbers.
For now, the safest summary is:
GTA 6 is reported by Rockstar developers to have a substantially larger playable world than GTA 5, with Vice City alone around twice the size of Los Santos, but there is still no official km² or square-mile measurement.
Size is only part of the comparison. GTA 6 also appears to put more developed locations outside its main city, making Leonida less dependent on one dense urban center surrounded by large stretches of comparatively sparse countryside.
How much of that world contains meaningful activities, accessible buildings and useful destinations will ultimately matter more than the raw area alone.
Characters and story: how the setup differs
GTA 5 follows Franklin, Michael and Trevor through three intersecting criminal lives.
Its character-switching system lets the story jump between different perspectives and, during some missions, move between characters performing different roles in the same operation.
GTA 6 instead centers its story on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Rockstar’s official premise says an easy score goes wrong and leaves the pair caught inside a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida, forcing them to rely on each other to survive.
That relationship also affects gameplay.
Developer interviews describe Jason and Lucia operating together or separately. During some pursuits, one can drive while the other attacks, and the player can switch between them.
Character switching is not always unrestricted, however. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that story progression and specific missions can determine which protagonist is available at a given moment.
That makes GTA 6’s structure different from simply taking GTA 5’s system and removing one protagonist.
GTA 5 was built around three very different characters whose stories repeatedly collide. GTA 6 appears to build much more of its campaign around the relationship between two people whose decisions and circumstances are closely connected.
Gameplay differences: what changes in GTA 6?
The 2026 previews finally give us enough information to compare actual gameplay systems instead of relying primarily on trailers and speculation.
Driving, vehicle theft and fuel
Vehicles remain central to GTA 6, but Rockstar is adding more systems around how players acquire and use them.

Rob Nelson told Flow Games that combustion vehicles use fuel, which can eventually run out. Electric vehicles instead use charging points.
The system is not intended to require constant refueling. Nelson described it as a way to create unexpected situations, for example, stealing a getaway car only to discover that it has very little fuel remaining.
Vehicle theft itself is also more involved.
Depending on the vehicle, players may need different tools to gain access. Developer demonstrations and interviews have mentioned lock-related tools, key-cloning equipment, alarms and trackers.
Some stolen vehicles can then be sold, with their condition affecting their value.
That makes stealing a car potentially more involved than GTA 5’s typical approach of breaking in and immediately driving away.
The final driving model still needs hands-on testing, but Rockstar has described different vehicle behavior based on the car, terrain, damage and modifications.
Shooting, movement and carried equipment
GTA 6 also changes how many weapons the player can carry.

Flow Games reports that Jason and Lucia can carry two short weapons and two long weapons, with additional weapons and equipment stored in vehicles.
Larger weapons are physically visible on the character rather than appearing from an effectively unlimited inventory.
The vehicle therefore becomes part of loadout preparation rather than simply transportation.
The Extended Look also demonstrates more detailed body-part targeting. Enemies can be hit in limbs and incapacitated without necessarily being killed, while hit indicators distinguish between different outcomes.
This could make combat more deliberate than GTA 5’s large portable arsenal and relatively straightforward shootouts, although responsiveness and balance will only be clear after release.
Police, witnesses and NPC reactions
One of the more significant differences is how GTA 6 handles identification during crimes.
According to developer interviews, police do not simply receive perfect knowledge of the player’s identity. Information available to them can include:
- physical appearance,
- clothing,
- the vehicle being used,
- visible weapons.
Changing clothes or vehicles can therefore help during an escape.
Flow Games reports that Rockstar has tried to base police perception on what officers can realistically observe. Pay ’n’ Spray remains useful, but changing a vehicle alone may not solve every problem if the character has already been identified in another way.
GTA 6 also includes a Criminal Profile system.
Developer explanations describe it as a record of how the player behaves during criminal activity. Different approaches, including how aggressively the player treats other people, can affect reactions and may have broader narrative consequences.
That is a more useful difference than simply saying GTA 6 has “better police AI.” The important change is that the game appears to track more information about how crimes are committed and who authorities believe they are looking for.
Activities, interiors and everyday interactions
GTA 5 already contains plenty of optional activities, including parachuting, underwater exploration, sports and recreational content.
GTA 6 expands that side of the open world further.
The Extended Look and developer previews have shown or discussed activities including:
- basketball,
- kayaking,
- scuba diving,
- exercise and weightlifting,
- hunting and exploration,
- robberies,
- vehicle theft and resale,
- underwater wrecks and treasure.
Food and exercise can also affect the protagonists physically. Rockstar developers have discussed systems tracking elements such as muscle and body fat, bringing back an idea most closely associated with GTA: San Andreas.
Interiors appear to play a larger role as well.
Preview coverage describes accessible stores, safehouses, building lobbies, rooftops and locations used during missions that can remain part of the open world.
That does not mean every building in Leonida will be enterable.
What matters more is whether those interiors support useful activities. A shop that can be robbed, a building connected to exploration or a safehouse with gameplay functions matters more than a high raw count of doors that can be opened.
Platforms and performance: what changes for players?
GTA 5 has one of the longest platform histories of any Rockstar game.
It originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 before moving to PS4 and Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The current versions therefore look and perform very differently from the 2013 originals.
That makes the comparison baseline important.
GTA 5 performance on PS5
Rockstar provides three graphics modes for the native PS5 version:
Fidelity Mode
- native 4K
- ray tracing
- targets 30fps
Performance Mode
- upscaled 4K
- targets 60fps
Performance RT
- upscaled 4K
- ray tracing
- targets 60fps
These modes allow GTA 5 players to choose between higher image quality and higher frame rate.
What about GTA 6?
GTA 6 is officially announced for:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
PlayStation explicitly states that GTA 6 is not available on PS4.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version in its current platform information. That does not mean GTA 6 will never come to PC; it simply means no PC release is currently part of the announced launch platforms.
As for performance, Rob Nelson told Flow Games that current console development builds were running at 30fps.
That is not the same as Rockstar announcing a final 30fps cap.
Nelson said he would need to consult the technical team regarding the possibility of a 60fps mode at launch or later, and he did not provide final resolution or ray-tracing specifications.
The PlayStation version is also labelled PS5 Pro Enhanced, but Sony has not published a specific GTA 6 frame-rate target or graphics-mode breakdown for PS5 Pro.
Until Rockstar releases final technical specifications, or independent testing becomes possible, claims such as “GTA 6 is confirmed to run only at 30fps” go beyond the available evidence.
GTA Online and multiplayer: what can be compared?
GTA 5’s multiplayer history makes this part of the comparison unusually complicated.
GTA Online has grown for more than a decade through businesses, cooperative heists, races, properties, vehicles and numerous major updates.
Those features should not be treated as part of GTA 5’s original single-player campaign when comparing the two games.
For GTA 6, Rockstar currently describes the announced product as a single-player experience, and PlayStation lists it as a one-player game.
Rockstar has not announced detailed GTA 6 multiplayer plans.
There is currently no confirmed information covering:
- multiplayer launch timing,
- player counts,
- cross-play,
- GTA Online character transfers,
- money or property transfers,
- vehicle transfers,
- whether the existing GTA Online service will be replaced.
A GTA+ pre-order promotion also does not, by itself, confirm the structure of a future GTA 6 online mode.
Until Rockstar says more, detailed comparisons between GTA Online and a hypothetical GTA 6 multiplayer experience are speculative.
What matters most in GTA 6 compared to GTA 5?
The most important differences are already more substantial than improved graphics alone.
Leonida changes the shape of the world. GTA 6 combines Vice City with islands, wetlands, smaller settlements, industrial areas and other regions across a broader state.
Jason and Lucia change the story structure. Instead of three largely independent protagonists whose paths intersect, GTA 6 revolves around a pair whose relationship affects both the narrative and gameplay.
Vehicles require more decisions. Fuel, charging, security systems, trackers, theft tools and storage create more reasons to think about which vehicle to use and what is inside it.
Weapons are less abstract. A smaller carried arsenal and vehicle-based storage make preparation more important than opening a weapon wheel containing almost everything the player owns.
Police respond to more information. Clothing, appearance, weapons and vehicles can contribute to identification rather than the wanted system functioning only as a simple escalation meter.
And while the visual jump is obvious in Rockstar’s footage, graphics will not determine the final comparison by themselves.
The bigger question is how all of these systems work together during dozens of hours of normal play.
That is where GTA 6 will ultimately be compared with GTA 5, not in a single screenshot, trailer frame or map-size number.
FAQ
Is GTA 6’s map twice the size of GTA 5’s?
According to accounts from Rockstar North’s 2026 preview sessions, Rob Nelson described GTA 6’s complete map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map.
TGG reported that comparison after visiting Rockstar North, while Nelson was also quoted in other preview coverage saying Vice City itself is around twice the size of Los Santos.
The important caveat is that Rockstar has not published an exact surface area or measurement methodology. Treat the approximately 2× figure as a developer-reported comparison, not as a independently measured square-kilometer figure.
Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?
According to Rob Nelson, Vice City itself is approximately twice the size of Los Santos.
Preview coverage also indicates that GTA 6 contains substantially more developed areas outside its main city, with additional towns and urban locations across Leonida.
Is GTA 6’s map three times bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2?
TGG reported that Rob Nelson described GTA 6’s map as roughly three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
As with the GTA 5 comparison, Rockstar has not published an official km² figure, so the statement should be treated as a relative developer comparison rather than a precise independent measurement.
Is a comparison with modded GTA 5 fair?
It can be useful, but it answers a different question.
A modded GTA 5 PC showcase may use reshades, replacement textures, lighting modifications, increased traffic density and other changes that are not part of Rockstar’s standard game.
For a useful comparison, identify the GTA 5 edition, hardware, graphics settings and mods being used.
For this article, the native PS5 version provides a cleaner standard baseline.
Does PS5 Pro Enhanced guarantee GTA 6 will run at 60fps?
No.
The PS5 Pro Enhanced designation confirms that GTA 6 supports enhancements for the console, but it does not specify a 60fps mode.
Rockstar has not published the final GTA 6 graphics-mode or frame-rate breakdown.
Is GTA 6 confirmed to run at 30fps?
Not as a final launch specification.
Rob Nelson told Flow Games that console development builds were running at 30fps at the time of the 2026 preview. He did not confirm whether a 60fps option would be available at launch or later.
Are GTA 6’s gameplay changes still just rumors?
Many are no longer rumors.
Named Rockstar developers have discussed systems including:
- fuel and EV charging,
- more involved vehicle theft,
- limited carried weapons,
- vehicle-based equipment storage,
- police identification,
- Criminal Profiles,
- physical changes from food and exercise,
- character-switching restrictions.
Their final implementation still needs to be tested in the released game, but these systems now have much stronger sourcing than older leaks and speculation.
Will GTA 6 come to PC?
Rockstar currently lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as GTA 6’s platforms.
No PC version has been announced.
That should not be interpreted as confirmation that a PC version will never exist-only that Rockstar has not announced one at this time.
Will existing GTA Online progress carry over to GTA 6?
Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 transfer policy.
There is currently no confirmed information showing that GTA Online characters, money, vehicles, properties or purchases will transfer into a future GTA 6 multiplayer experience.
Previous migration systems between GTA 5 editions do not guarantee that the same approach will be used for GTA 6.
