Grand Theft Auto VI is set across Leonida, Rockstar Games’ fictional version of Florida. Vice City is the main urban center and is based on Miami, but the game extends far beyond one city. Official material shows tropical islands, wetlands, declining coastal communities, inland industry and northern wilderness.

Rockstar’s current location hub profiles six major destinations: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. Game Informer’s September 2026 cover story also described these as Leonida’s six main regions. In the same feature, Rockstar head of development and co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the map is about twice the size of GTA 5’s and considerably denser.

The public still does not have a readable, standalone version of the complete map. Rockstar’s upcoming Goodtime State - Vice City Collection includes a double-sided souvenir poster with a “full view” of the Leonida map on the reverse, but the store’s promotional image does not reveal the full road network, regional boundaries or complete settlement list.

TL;DR

  • GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional state based on Florida.
  • Vice City is based on Miami and is the game’s main city.
  • Rockstar has identified six main regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
  • Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut has described Leonida as about twice the size of GTA 5’s map, but no exact area in square miles or square kilometers has been published.
  • Official materials also name places such as Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, Washington Beach, Stockyard, Watson Bay, Gambit Bay and Lake Leonida.
  • A physical poster with the Leonida map has been announced, but a readable complete map has not been released online.
  • Community maps remain unofficial reconstructions, even when they use genuine trailer frames, road signs and official screenshots.

Where is GTA 6 located?

GTA 6 takes place in the fictional American state of Leonida. Vice City sits at the heart of the setting, while the wider world includes islands, marshes, coastal settlements, industrial areas, farms, forests and elevated northern terrain.

The broad real-world comparisons are:

Table comparing GTA 6 locations with their real-world inspirations and the strength of available evidence.
Leonida and Vice City are explicitly based on Florida and Miami, while several other comparisons rely on official imagery, geography and current developer reporting.

These are creative inspirations, not exact geographical conversions. Rockstar’s teams spent years researching Miami and the surrounding region, but the studio rearranges and combines real places to serve the story, road network and gameplay.

What is officially confirmed about the GTA 6 map?

The six main regions

Rockstar’s official location material and current reporting identify six main regions or destinations:

  1. Vice City
  2. Leonida Keys
  3. Grassrivers
  4. Port Gellhorn
  5. Ambrosia
  6. Mount Kalaga National Park

These names are not a list of six cities. Vice City is clearly presented as a major city. The others include an archipelago, wetlands, a coastal destination, an inland industrial area and a national park.

Rockstar currently profiles six major destinations across Leonida: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

How this guide treats evidence

This article uses four simple categories:

  • Officially confirmed: named or described by Rockstar, PlayStation or Xbox in first-party material.
  • Reported from developer interviews: attributed to Rockstar staff by publications with direct access.
  • Visible in official media: shown in a Rockstar trailer or screenshot but not fully classified.
  • Unconfirmed: reconstructed from community maps, unauthorized development footage or speculation.

The 2022 GTA 6 security breach was real, but unfinished development material can contain placeholder names, incomplete geography and content that changes before release. This guide does not use stolen footage as its main evidence for the current map.

Every major GTA 6 location confirmed so far

Vice City

Vice City is GTA 6’s main city and the center of much of the game’s marketing. It is a contemporary reworking of the Miami-inspired setting first used in earlier Grand Theft Auto games, not a road-for-road recreation of the 2002 map.

Official material presents Vice City as a place of beaches, pastel hotels, high-rise development, nightlife, music, ports, canals and sharp differences in wealth. Rockstar’s location profile names several smaller places within the city:

  • Ocean Beach, a beachfront area associated with white sand and Art Deco hotels
  • Little Cuba, a neighborhood shaped by Cuban and Latin American culture
  • Tisha-Wocka flea market, a named market selling counterfeit and bootleg goods
  • VC Port, a major port and cruise destination

Later official edition descriptions add Washington Beach, Stockyard and Southside Vice City. Dazed also identifies Stockyard as being based on Wynwood, Miami, and reports that more than 50 real street artists contributed mural work to the game.

The return of a familiar name such as Washington Beach does not mean the new district will reproduce its 2002 roads or boundaries. Rockstar has rebuilt Vice City for a larger modern setting.

Leonida Keys

The Leonida Keys are the game’s tropical island region. Rockstar’s imagery shows bridges, small islands, boats, marinas, weathered waterfront buildings and communities built around the water.

The Keys are also connected to the story. Jason Duval’s official biography places him among local drug runners in the region, while Brian Heder operates through a boat yard and represents an older generation of smugglers.

The Florida Keys comparison is clear, but the Leonida Keys should be treated as a fictional composite. Rockstar has not said that every real island has a direct in-game equivalent.

Grassrivers

Grassrivers is Leonida’s wetland region. Official material emphasizes mangroves, alligators, shallow water, airboats and dangers that may be hidden below the surface.

Its relationship with the Everglades is one of the strongest visual comparisons in the game. Both environments are defined by wetlands, wildlife and waterways rather than dense urban development.

Rockstar has not published the region’s complete boundaries or a full list of settlements inside it. Positions assigned by community maps remain estimates until the official map is readable.

Port Gellhorn

Port Gellhorn is presented as a former coastal vacation destination that has declined. Its identity is built around inexpensive motels, closed attractions, empty strip malls, roadside businesses and a struggling local economy.

The location appears to draw from several smaller Florida tourist communities rather than one confirmed real-world city. Current material does not clearly present Port Gellhorn as Leonida’s second major city, so “coastal destination,” “town” or “community” is more precise.

Its run-down tourism infrastructure also gives Port Gellhorn a different role from Vice City. The contrast is not simply urban versus rural, but between a booming metropolitan center and a place whose best years appear to be behind it.

Ambrosia

Ambrosia represents Leonida’s inland industrial and agricultural economy. Rockstar places the Allied Crystal sugar refinery at the center of the area and links local power to industry and biker activity.

The flat landscape, crop fields, processing facilities, rail infrastructure and sugar production make the region around Lake Okeechobee a credible real-world comparison. Rockstar has not identified Ambrosia as a direct recreation of Clewiston or any other single town.

Ambrosia is best understood as a named region or community within Leonida. Its exact municipal status matters less than its role as the industrial counterpoint to Vice City’s tourism, finance and nightlife.

Mount Kalaga National Park

Mount Kalaga National Park brings forests, rivers, wildlife and off-road terrain to northern Leonida. Rockstar associates the region with hunting, fishing, dirt bikes, ATVs, remote communities and people living away from the state’s major population centers.

Reporting based on Game Informer’s September cover story places Mount Kalaga along the Leonida-Gloriana boundary, the game’s equivalent of the Florida-Georgia line. Rockstar environment art vice president Paul MacPherson also discussed research into Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and smaller rural communities.

This makes Mount Kalaga more than an invented mountain dropped into a Florida parody. It represents the cultural and environmental transition between southern Leonida and the wider American Southeast.

The border does not prove that Gloriana is a second playable state. It confirms a neighboring fictional state and a boundary in the game’s wider world, not unrestricted access beyond Leonida.

Other officially named GTA 6 places

The six main regions are only the top level of the setting. Rockstar has revealed additional neighborhoods, waterways, institutions and landmarks through location profiles, trailers, character biographies and store descriptions.

Table listing other officially named GTA 6 places and the details that remain unknown about each location.
Official GTA 6 materials reveal additional neighborhoods, waterways, landmarks and inhabited locations, although their exact boundaries and positions have not yet been published.

The 2026 Ultimate Edition description is especially important because it provides first-party confirmation for Washington Beach, Gambit Bay, Watson Bay, Stockyard, Southside Vice City and Lake Leonida. Some businesses or activities attached to those places are edition-specific, but the place names themselves are official.

What cities are in GTA 6?

Vice City is the only location clearly presented as Leonida’s major city. The six main regions should not be described as six cities.

Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia contain developed, inhabited areas, but Rockstar does not consistently define their municipal status. Waning Sands, Watson Bay and communities across the Leonida Keys are also officially named or visible, although the public material does not provide a complete hierarchy of cities, towns, districts and counties.

Rockstar has not published:

  • the total number of cities or towns
  • a complete county list
  • every Vice City district
  • the final settlement hierarchy
  • every named island, lake or bay

Claims that GTA 6 contains exactly three cities, six cities or another fixed number usually mix official names with community classifications.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

In Game Informer’s September 2026 cover story, Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut described Leonida as the company’s biggest map “by some degree” and about twice the size of GTA 5’s map. He also emphasized increased density, detail, interactivity and a much larger number of interiors.

That comparison is the clearest official-scale statement currently available, but it does not provide an exact surface area. It also does not explain whether the comparison refers to total bounds, land, land plus water or the area available for regular traversal.

For that reason, precise figures in square miles or square kilometers remain unofficial. Community calculations may be useful estimates, but they should not be presented as Rockstar measurements.

For a closer comparison, see our guide to GTA 6 map size.

Has Rockstar revealed the complete GTA 6 map?

Rockstar has announced an official physical map but has not released a readable complete version online.

The upcoming Goodtime State - Vice City Collection includes a double-sided souvenir poster. Rockstar’s store says the front features illustrated Vice City artwork and the back provides a full view of the Leonida map. As of October 5, 2026, the product remains listed as coming soon and available to pre-order.

The public product image does not provide a readable standalone view of the reverse. It therefore cannot be used to verify every road, regional border, county, island or settlement.

Community maps can still be useful. They connect screenshots, signs, road geometry and camera positions into a working model of Leonida. Their coastlines, distances and boundaries remain unofficial until Rockstar publishes the map in a form that can be examined directly.

How closely does Leonida follow real Florida geography?

Leonida is based on Florida, but it is not a compressed copy of the state. Rockstar selects and combines places that support the game rather than reproducing every real landmark in its original position.

Three comparisons are directly established by current developer-access reporting:

  • Leonida is based on Florida
  • Vice City is based on Miami
  • Stockyard is based on Wynwood

Other comparisons are strong but broader. The Leonida Keys clearly draw from the Florida Keys, Grassrivers resembles the Everglades and Ambrosia reflects Florida’s sugar-producing interior. Port Gellhorn appears to combine elements from declining coastal tourist communities, while Mount Kalaga draws from the Florida-Georgia border and the wider Southeast.

A visual resemblance can support an inspiration claim without proving an exact map match. A hotel, bridge or district may borrow from a real place even when its surrounding streets are completely different.

Which rumored GTA 6 locations remain unconfirmed?

A playable second state

Current reporting places Mount Kalaga on the boundary between Leonida and Gloriana. That does not confirm that players can freely enter Gloriana, visit an Atlanta equivalent or explore a second complete state.

Exact county borders

County names may appear on official vehicles, signs or uniforms. Their full borders on fan maps usually remain reconstructions.

One-to-one Florida equivalents

Port Gellhorn may resemble several Gulf Coast or Panhandle communities. Ambrosia may evoke the Lake Okeechobee sugar belt. Unless Rockstar identifies a direct model, these comparisons should not be turned into definitive statements such as “Port Gellhorn is Panama City” or “Ambrosia is Clewiston.”

Every returning Vice City district

Washington Beach is an official current name, but Rockstar has not confirmed the complete return of the 2002 district list. Starfish Island, Little Haiti, Vice Point, Leaf Links and other familiar names should be assessed individually.

Precise map dimensions

The reported comparison with GTA 5 does not validate exact fan-made measurements. Land area, water area and total map bounds are different metrics and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Names found only in leaks

A name from unauthorized development footage may be a placeholder, internal label or removed location. The 2022 material should not be treated as a final directory of the game world.

What the confirmed locations tell us about GTA 6

GTA 6 is not simply a larger Vice City. Its world is structured around strong changes in landscape and economy.

Vice City concentrates high-rises, nightlife, ports and dense traffic. The Leonida Keys shift the focus toward boats and island communities. Grassrivers introduces wetlands and wildlife. Port Gellhorn adds faded tourism and roadside decline. Ambrosia brings agriculture and heavy industry into the setting. Mount Kalaga supplies forests, rivers and backcountry recreation.

The reported increase in size matters, but density may be just as important. A map can feel larger or smaller depending on its road network, interiors, travel speed, water coverage and the amount of meaningful activity between major destinations.

GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional American state based on Florida. Vice City is its main city, but the world also includes islands, wetlands, coastal communities, industrial areas and northern wilderness.

What city is GTA 6 based on?

Vice City is based on Miami. Rockstar’s teams researched Miami and the surrounding region for years while developing the game’s architecture, characters, businesses and culture.

Is GTA 6 only set in Vice City?

No. Vice City is one of six main regions. Rockstar has also identified the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.

What cities have been confirmed for GTA 6?

Vice City is the only place clearly presented as a major city. Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Waning Sands and Watson Bay are other named inhabited locations, but their exact classifications have not always been published.

Is Port Gellhorn a city?

Rockstar presents Port Gellhorn as a former coastal vacation destination with substantial development, but it has not clearly identified it as a second major city. “Coastal destination,” “town” or “community” is safer.

How large is the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut has described Leonida as about twice the size of GTA 5’s map and denser in detail and interiors. Rockstar has not published an exact area in square miles or square kilometers.

Has Rockstar released the full GTA 6 map?
