GTA 6 Gameplay Mechanics: Every New Feature and System We Know About

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Rockstar has now revealed enough about GTA 6 gameplay mechanics to show how differently the game will handle crime, character progression and everyday life in Leonida.

Jason and Lucia will not simply replace GTA 5’s three protagonists. Their relationship can change, their roles during missions may shift, and each character can continue with their own routine while the player controls the other. Committing a crime can involve witnesses, cameras, clothing descriptions, weapon identification and vehicle tracking. Stealing a valuable car may require the right equipment, while carrying a rifle openly can affect how pedestrians and police react.

Other confirmed systems include open-world robberies, visible weapon storage, physical training, weight and muscle changes, phone applications, localized storms, seasonal hurricanes and more than 170 animal species.

Not every action seen in a trailer is necessarily a repeatable mechanic, however. This guide separates information confirmed by Rockstar or named developers from actions shown only in official footage, details taken from unfinished development material and popular claims that remain unsupported.

TL;DR

  • Players can switch between Jason and Lucia, although some missions restrict or force the change at specific moments.
  • Jason and Lucia can develop their romantic relationship or operate mainly as criminal partners. Their relationship affects available interactions.
  • Police response now considers witnesses and identifying details such as clothing, appearance, weapons and vehicles.
  • The new Criminal Profile system tracks what kind of criminal the player becomes and can change how aggressively the world responds.
  • Robberies, vehicle theft and weapon management involve more preparation than in GTA 5.
  • Exercise, food and player habits can affect statistics and the protagonists’ physical appearance.
  • GTA 6 includes localized storms, tropical weather, seasonal hurricanes and more than 170 animal species.
  • Rockstar has not confirmed mandatory vehicle refueling, a cooperative campaign, universal building interiors or complete daily schedules for every NPC.

How this guide classifies GTA 6 information

The available information comes from several different types of sources. They should not all be treated as equally conclusive.

Confirmed on an official page means that the information appears on Rockstar Games’ website, its official media library or the PlayStation product page.

Confirmed in a direct developer interview means that a named Rockstar developer described the mechanic in an authorized interview. Much of the detailed gameplay information in this article comes from Famitsu’s interview with Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North.

Reported from direct access to Rockstar covers details published by outlets such as Dazed and Game Informer after speaking with Rockstar or receiving developer information.

Shown in official footage means that an action appears in a Rockstar trailer or video. This confirms that the sequence exists, but it does not always establish whether the action is freely repeatable, tied to a mission or controlled by the player.

Development-build evidence refers to unfinished material from the 2022 leak. It can show what Rockstar was testing at the time, but not what will necessarily appear in the finished game.

Jason and Lucia have a more flexible character-switching system

GTA 6 retains the character-switching concept introduced in GTA 5, but it uses the system differently.

In Famitsu’s direct interview with Rob Nelson, the Rockstar North developer explained that some missions allow players to move freely between Jason and Lucia. Other sequences lock the player to the character whose perspective best fits the scene. The game can also force a switch at a designed moment.

One example begins with the player controlling Jason as he fires from a vehicle driven by Lucia. Control later moves to Lucia, leaving Jason and another character to return fire from the back seat. Other missions let players alternate between both protagonists as the situation develops.

Rockstar has described missions in which control can move between Jason and Lucia, although switching may be restricted or forced during specific sequences.

Jason and Lucia can also commit certain robberies alone or together. The player may invite the other protagonist to join an activity, assign them a role or leave them to continue with their own plans.

The inactive character does not always wait in one fixed location. Both protagonists have routines around their hideouts, and the player can switch to the other character or bring them together. This confirms schedules for Jason, Lucia and some hideout residents. It does not prove that every pedestrian in Leonida follows a complete daily timetable.

Jason and Lucia’s relationship affects gameplay

The protagonists’ relationship is more than a fixed part of the story.

Rob Nelson told Famitsu that players can approach Jason and Lucia as a committed couple or mainly as two criminals who need each other. Investing in their romantic relationship can unlock interactions such as holding hands or kissing. Those options can disappear if the relationship deteriorates and return if the player rebuilds it.

The game includes a visible relationship status, although Rockstar has not yet explained every factor that changes it. It is also unclear how deeply the system affects individual missions, later story events or the ending.

This is not a traditional character-creation system. Jason and Lucia remain established protagonists with their own histories and personalities. The player instead influences how their partnership develops within that framework.

Robberies are part of the open world, not only scripted missions

GTA 6 expands robbery mechanics beyond large story heists.

Rockstar has described stores, gang locations, jewelry shops and smaller banks that can be targeted in the open world. Some can be approached alone or with the other protagonist.

A direct attack remains possible, but players may also search for a rear entrance, use a specialized lock-opening tool, destroy cameras or disable an alarm system. In Famitsu’s demonstration, entering through a locked rear door and dealing with the security equipment made it possible to steal money without immediately alerting the police.

Gang locations can contain money or drugs, and the map may provide information about the value of what is stored there. Stolen goods can then be taken to an appropriate fence.

The same interview described a suppressive-fire option. Instead of shooting a civilian or police officer directly, the player can fire nearby to frighten them, keep them behind cover or create time to escape. Violence remains available, but avoiding unnecessary deaths may reduce the consequences for the player’s Criminal Profile.

Free-roam crime is tied more closely to the economy

Money earned outside the main missions will have a larger role than it did in GTA 5.

According to Rob Nelson, completing story missions alone will not provide all the money required to keep progressing. Players will also need to earn income through activities in the open world, including robberies and selling stolen vehicles.

The game distinguishes between cash carried by the protagonist and money stored in a bank account. Carried cash can be lost after the character is arrested or killed, while deposited money is safer.

This connects systems that were more separate in GTA 5. A robbery is not only a temporary source of chaos. It can contribute to story progression, affect police attention, influence the Criminal Profile and require decisions about vehicles, weapons and escape routes.

Police response depends on witnesses and identifying information

GTA 6’s wanted system is not designed to treat every crime as though the police immediately know what happened.

Diagram showing how witnesses, cameras and suspect information may affect the GTA 6 Heat system.
GTA 6’s police response can use witness reports and identifying details such as clothing, vehicles and visible weapons. Rockstar has not yet explained how long this information remains active.

Rob Nelson said Rockstar has brought witness logic similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 into GTA 6. A wanted response can depend on the severity of the offense and whether a witness, camera or security system reports it.

When a report is made, the police may receive information about:

  • the suspect’s clothing,
  • physical appearance,
  • visible weapon,
  • mask or disguise,
  • and the vehicle used during the crime.

Famitsu’s interview refers to the resulting search state as Heat. During Heat, the police may know what they are looking for without knowing the player’s exact location.

Changing clothes, removing a mask, concealing or discarding a reported weapon and abandoning a known vehicle can make identification more difficult. Repainting a car at Pay ’n’ Spray can also help, although returning to a vehicle already connected to a crime may expose the player again.

Rockstar has not explained exactly how long identifying information remains active, whether it persists across large parts of the map or how quickly police forget an earlier description.

Criminal Profile is not a conventional morality meter

Criminal Profile is separate from the immediate Heat system.

The feature tracks aspects of the player’s criminal behavior and evaluates whether they act more like a controlled professional or a violent, dangerous offender. Rob Nelson compared it with Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system, but also explained that GTA 6 does not use a simple good-versus-evil scale.

A player who regularly escalates situations, attacks police or uses unnecessary violence may face more aggressive reactions. A more restrained player can still commit crimes, but may attract a different response from civilians and law enforcement.

Rockstar does not want the system to prescribe one correct way to play. Aggressive and controlled approaches remain valid, although either style may lead players to encounter different reactions or miss certain situations.

Criminal Profile should therefore not be described as proof that GTA 6 has a traditional morality, reputation or karma system. It is specifically framed as an assessment of the kind of criminal the player becomes.

Long guns are visible and use physical storage

GTA 6 moves away from the unlimited invisible arsenal associated with earlier entries.

Long guns can no longer simply disappear when they are not being held. Rob Nelson explained that players can store weapons in lockers available at Ammu-Nation locations or place them in a personal vehicle. Weapons can also be stored in the trunk of a stolen car for as long as that vehicle remains available.

Owned weapons remain connected to the storage system, so leaving one behind does not necessarily mean permanently losing it.

Carrying a weapon also has consequences. A long gun visible on the character may not automatically cause mass panic, but actively walking around with a firearm in hand can make pedestrians leave, react aggressively or draw police attention.

This changes weapon selection from a menu-only decision into part of the preparation for a crime. Players may need to decide what to carry, where to store additional equipment and whether appearing in public with a particular weapon is worth the attention.

Rockstar has not announced the exact number of firearms that Jason or Lucia can carry at one time.

Vehicle theft involves tools, alarms and trackers

Stealing a car is no longer always a single animation followed by an immediate escape.

Players can scan a vehicle to identify its model, estimated value and the potential cost of registering it. Older or cheaper cars may be accessible with basic lock-opening equipment. Newer and more valuable vehicles can require a key-cloning device obtained later in the game.

High-value cars are also more likely to include alarms and advanced trackers. A player may successfully enter a car but still reveal its location to the police after driving away. Some vehicles cannot be sold immediately and may need to be delivered to a specialist capable of removing the tracker.

The vehicle’s condition matters. Damage sustained during a police chase can reduce its resale value, encouraging players to weigh a fast escape against keeping the car intact.

Vehicle owners are less predictable as well. Some may follow an order to get out. Others can resist, fight back or draw a weapon. If the owner reports the theft, police may receive a description of both the car and the person driving it.

Personal vehicles, temporary cars and garages work differently

GTA 6 distinguishes between registered personal vehicles and cars that have only been stolen temporarily.

Pay ’n’ Spray locations can repair or repaint vehicles, while tuning shops provide more detailed customization. A stolen vehicle can be registered as personal property, and additional garages can be purchased to expand storage capacity.

A temporary stolen vehicle can remain available for a period, but may disappear after the game is restarted. Personal vehicles are more persistent and can carry the protagonists’ weapons.

This makes a car part of the player’s equipment plan rather than only a means of transportation. A personal vehicle can function as transport, mobile weapon storage and an asset that may need to be protected.

Rockstar has not confirmed a fuel-consumption system. The presence of gas stations, pumps and service areas in footage does not establish that vehicles require mandatory refueling.

NPCs are more varied and may fight back

Rockstar describes Leonida as more reactive and less accommodating to the player than GTA 5’s Los Santos.

Some residents are armed, and not everyone will automatically flee from a threat. People may resist a carjacking, respond aggressively to an openly held weapon or report suspicious behavior to the police.

The pedestrian population also includes a wider range of heights, body types and physical characteristics. Rockstar says it has worked to reduce obvious repetition, although visual variety alone should not be confused with more advanced artificial intelligence.

The more important gameplay change is that civilians have a clearer role in connected systems. They can become witnesses, resist the player, react to weapons or help trigger a police search. Criminal Profile may further influence the hostility of those reactions.

Hideouts change as the story moves through Leonida

The campaign is divided into chapters, and Jason and Lucia will not remain in one permanent home throughout the game.

Rob Nelson compared the hideout structure with the changing camps in Red Dead Redemption 2. As the story progresses and the protagonists move through Leonida, their living arrangements and the people around them can change.

Hideout residents have routines, and the locations are intended to feel inhabited rather than functioning only as save points. The inactive protagonist may also follow their own plans while the player is elsewhere.

These details apply to the protagonists and people associated with their hideouts. They do not support the broader online claim that every NPC in Leonida has a complete daily schedule.

The phone is a physical object with functional applications

GTA 5 largely presented its phone as a two-dimensional interface placed over the game screen. GTA 6 treats the device as a physical object held by the protagonist.

Confirmed applications include:

  • social-media feeds,
  • video content,
  • fitness tools,
  • banking,
  • and vehicle delivery.

Famitsu also named Scooter Bros as an application used to request a personal vehicle.

Jason and Lucia can send photographs to each other, but Rob Nelson said they cannot freely upload their own posts because they are trying to remain hidden. Players can still browse other people’s social content.

This distinction matters because trailers contain many vertical-video and social-media scenes. They establish that social platforms are central to Leonida’s culture, but they do not prove that every feed shown is a fully controllable player application.

Livestreams can lead players to random events

Social media can also connect the phone with events occurring in the open world.

Rob Nelson described an encounter involving a livestreaming stranger as a random event rather than a fixed story mission. Players can discover and interact with similar people in different locations, although Rockstar has not announced how many of these events exist.

This suggests that the phone may help contextualize what is happening around the player rather than functioning only as a menu for contacts and services.

Fitness, food and habits change the protagonists

Jason and Lucia can change physically in response to how the player treats them.

GTA 6 tracks statistics connected with health, cardiovascular fitness and physical conditioning. Gym workouts function as interactive minigames in which the player manages exercise sets, movement and stamina. Training can improve base health and stamina, while eating affects body weight.

Food and drinks can also provide temporary bonuses. An energy drink, for example, can temporarily extend a character’s stamina meter.

Dazed reported that exercise visibly builds and tones muscle. Food changes weight, while long periods away from bed, time spent fleeing police or extended partying can leave visible effects on a protagonist’s appearance.

Clothing, hairstyles and other customization options add another layer, but Jason and Lucia remain recognizable characters rather than blank avatars.

Some activities are confirmed, while others have only been shown

Fishing has been discussed directly by Rockstar and can be treated as a confirmed activity.

An Extended Look also depicts basketball, scuba diving, kayaking, weightlifting, dirt bikes, fanboats and other recreational sequences. Their appearance establishes that Rockstar created those scenes, but it does not answer every gameplay question.

An activity shown in footage could be:

  • a freely repeatable minigame,
  • part of a mission,
  • a contextual interaction,
  • an animation triggered in a specific location,
  • or a cinematic sequence.

Until Rockstar explains the rules, progression or availability attached to an activity, it is safer to describe it as shown rather than confirmed as a complete open-world system.

Leonida has localized storms and seasonal hurricanes

Game Informer’s September 2026 reporting, based on information supplied by Rockstar, provides the clearest description of GTA 6’s weather system.

Weather can vary between different parts of Leonida. The player may stand in a dry, sunny area while seeing a storm in the distance. After the rain passes, puddles and wet surfaces can remain in the affected location. Rainbows can also appear under suitable lighting conditions.

Tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes are confirmed. Rockstar has not yet explained how often hurricanes occur or whether they create flooding, close roads, interrupt missions or significantly change NPC behavior.

Their presence should not be expanded into an unsupported claim that GTA 6 includes a fully simulated natural-disaster system.

GTA 6 includes more than 170 animal species

Leonida will contain more than 170 animal species across land, air and water.

Confirmed examples include alligators, flamingos, manatees, pelicans, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. Rockstar has also developed new systems for details such as feathers, coats, fur, translucency, iridescence and bioluminescence.

Certain animals can be tracked through categories named Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. Rockstar has not yet identified all of the animals in these groups or explained what rewards are connected with finding them.

How GTA 6 gameplay compares with GTA 5

Table comparing gameplay mechanics and systems in GTA 5 and GTA 6.
GTA 6 expands several systems from GTA 5, including character switching, police identification, vehicle theft, weapon storage, physical conditioning, weather and wildlife.

The main difference is not any single feature. GTA 6 connects systems that were often more independent in GTA 5.

Stealing a valuable vehicle can require equipment, trigger an alarm, expose the car through a tracker, produce a witness description and begin a Heat search. Damaging the vehicle during the escape can lower its value. Drawing a weapon can change NPC reactions, while using unnecessary violence can influence the Criminal Profile.

The same crime can therefore involve the economy, police identification, vehicles, weapons, witnesses and player behavior at the same time.

What the official GTA 6 videos tell us

Rockstar’s official media library currently lists three main GTA 6 videos: Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and An Extended Look. It does not list a separate release titled “Gameplay Trailer.”

Trailer 1

Released on December 4, 2023, Trailer 1 introduced Lucia, Leonida, Vice City’s crowded public spaces, local wildlife and the game’s social-media theme.

The trailer is useful evidence for the setting, characters and atmosphere. It is less useful for determining the exact rules of individual gameplay systems because many scenes do not clearly show player control.

Trailer 2

Released on May 6, 2025, Trailer 2 expanded Jason and Lucia’s story and revealed more locations, vehicles, characters and criminal situations.

As with Trailer 1, an action performed during a cinematic scene should not automatically be described as a repeatable open-world mechanic.

An Extended Look

Rockstar released An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. The company states that the video was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.

The presentation includes interface prompts, a minimap, character switching, driving, shooting, exercise, robberies and recreational scenes. It provides the strongest official look at GTA 6’s systems so far, but it is an edited presentation rather than one uninterrupted gameplay session.

The term “in-game footage” also covers scenes rendered inside the game engine. It does not mean every part of the video shows direct player control.

What the 2022 GTA 6 leak can and cannot prove

In September 2022, Take-Two confirmed that a hacker had leaked early GTA 6 development footage. Reuters reported that the material included unfinished scenes involving robberies, gunplay and open-world driving.

Several broad ideas visible in that footage have since been supported by official material or direct developer interviews. Jason and Lucia are playable, character switching exists, robberies are interactive, witnesses affect police response and weapons can be stored in vehicles.

That does not retroactively confirm every menu, animation, debug label or interaction visible in the development build. Features may have been changed, redesigned or removed during the following years.

The leak is useful as a historical record of development, not as a definitive list of final mechanics.
