GTA 6 FPS: 30 or 60 FPS on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S?

Last updated: September 24, 2026

GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026, and the PlayStation Store now lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced.

What Rockstar has not announced is just as important: there is still no official console-by-console list of final frame-rate targets or graphics modes.

The strongest evidence available today points toward 30 FPS on current console builds. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson reportedly told Flow Games that the console versions were running at 30 FPS at the time of its preview, while Digital Foundry's analysis of Rockstar's Extended Look also found the PS5 footage running at 30 FPS.

A 60 FPS mode has not been confirmed for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.

TL;DR

  • PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are officially confirmed for GTA VI.
  • GTA VI is officially listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
  • Rockstar has not announced final graphics or performance modes.
  • Rockstar North's Rob Nelson reportedly said current console builds were running at 30 FPS.
  • Digital Foundry also analyzed the Extended Look as 30 FPS footage.
  • There is currently no confirmed 60 FPS mode, including on PS5 Pro.
  • If 60 FPS is your main reason for buying a PS5 Pro for GTA VI, it makes sense to wait for Rockstar's final performance details.

What we actually know about GTA 6 FPS

There are now three useful types of evidence: official Rockstar and platform information, developer comments reported during previews, and independent technical analysis.

Officially confirmed

Rockstar schedules GTA VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The PlayStation Store also carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.

However, Rockstar has not yet published final specifications covering:

  • FPS targets
  • Fidelity and performance modes
  • rendering resolution
  • PS5 Pro-specific graphics settings
  • Xbox Series X versus Series S performance differences

That means neither 30 FPS nor 60 FPS should currently be presented as Rockstar's final retail specification.

Developer comments point to 30 FPS

Flow Games' August 27 preview provides the clearest developer-linked information so far.

The publication reported that Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said the console builds were running at 30 FPS "for now." When asked about a possible 60 FPS option at launch or later, Nelson reportedly said he would need to check with the technical team.

That makes 30 FPS the strongest current expectation, but it is not the same thing as Rockstar announcing a final 30 FPS cap for every console.

Digital Foundry also found 30 FPS in the Extended Look

Rockstar's August Extended Look gave technical analysts much more footage to examine.

Digital Foundry dedicated part of its analysis specifically to “Performance: 30 FPS only”, finding the PlayStation 5 footage to be running at 30 FPS.

This lines up with the Rob Nelson comments and makes 30 FPS a much stronger working expectation than it was earlier in GTA VI's marketing cycle.

It still describes the footage and current development state rather than a complete list of final launch modes.

GTA 6 console availability and FPS comparison

GTA 6 is confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with PS5 Pro Enhanced support also listed. Final FPS and graphics modes have not yet been announced, although current developer comments and technical analysis point to 30 FPS on console builds.

PlayStation also explicitly states that GTA VI is not playable on PS4.

PC, Xbox One and Nintendo platforms are not part of Rockstar's currently announced launch lineup. Their absence should not be interpreted as confirmation that versions will never appear later.

GTA 6 FPS on PS5

For standard PS5 owners, there is currently no confirmed 60 FPS mode.

What we do have is considerably stronger evidence for 30 FPS than before.

Rockstar says the Extended Look was:

“Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.”

Digital Foundry's analysis found that footage running at 30 FPS, while Flow Games' reporting independently points to current console development builds operating at the same frame rate.

That makes 30 FPS the most evidence-backed expectation for PS5 today.

It does not rule out Rockstar announcing another mode before release, but players should not assume one exists until it is documented.

Sony has separately announced GTA VI support for features including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, controller audio, Tempest 3D Audio and fast loading.

Those features describe the PS5 experience but do not tell us whether the game will offer a 60 FPS performance mode.

GTA 6 FPS on PS5 Pro: will it support 60 FPS?

PS5 Pro Enhanced is confirmed

The PlayStation Store officially lists GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced.

That confirms Rockstar is taking advantage of Sony's more powerful console in some form.

What the badge does not tell us is exactly what the upgrade includes.

Rockstar and Sony have not yet detailed:

  • a 60 FPS mode
  • PS5 Pro resolution targets
  • ray-tracing differences
  • specific graphics settings
  • whether GTA VI uses PSSR
  • which version of PSSR it might use

So there are two separate questions.

Will GTA VI take advantage of PS5 Pro?

Yes. The official PS5 Pro Enhanced listing confirms that.

Will GTA VI run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?

That remains unconfirmed.

Why PS5 Pro does not automatically mean 60 FPS

PS5 Pro has a significantly stronger graphics setup than the standard PS5.

Sony highlights three main areas:

  • a larger and faster GPU
  • improved ray-tracing performance
  • PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR

Those improvements can help developers increase image quality, resolution or frame rate. But they do not automatically turn every 30 FPS game into a 60 FPS game.

The reason is simple: increasing a game from 30 to 60 FPS cuts the available time for each frame roughly in half.

At 30 FPS, the system has about 33.3 milliseconds to produce a frame.

At 60 FPS, it has about 16.7 milliseconds.

A stronger GPU can help if graphics rendering is the main bottleneck, but open-world games also depend heavily on CPU-side systems such as simulation, animation, traffic, NPC logic and streaming.

Rockstar has not published enough technical information to establish what limits GTA VI's performance on each console.

Could PS5 Pro improve image quality instead?

Yes.

PS5 Pro enhancements can be used to improve image clarity and graphical settings even when the underlying frame-rate target stays the same.

Sony introduced an upgraded version of PSSR in February 2026 and began a broader rollout through PS5 Pro system software in March.

The updated reconstruction technology offers improved image stability and clarity across supported titles.

However, neither Rockstar nor Sony has confirmed whether GTA VI uses PSSR, which version it would use, or how it contributes to the game's PS5 Pro enhancements.

If 60 FPS in GTA VI is your main reason for upgrading to PS5 Pro, wait for Rockstar's final performance details.

The Pro version could still offer better image quality or other visual improvements even if both consoles share the same frame-rate target.

GTA 6 FPS on Xbox Series X

Xbox Series X is officially supported for GTA VI, but Rockstar and Microsoft have not announced its final FPS target or graphics modes.

The PS5 Extended Look cannot tell us exactly how the Xbox version will perform.

Even if PS5 and Series X eventually share the same frame-rate target, they could still differ in areas such as:

  • rendering resolution
  • ray-tracing settings
  • image reconstruction
  • graphics quality
  • frame-rate stability

A meaningful PS5 versus Xbox Series X comparison will require direct testing using the final versions of the game.

GTA 6 FPS on Xbox Series S

GTA VI is also officially coming to Xbox Series S.

Microsoft's listing does not currently provide separate Series S frame-rate or resolution targets.

That has produced plenty of speculation about possible compromises, but Rockstar has not announced reduced traffic density, missing gameplay systems, a smaller world or a different FPS cap specifically for Series S.

Until Rockstar publishes the details or the final game can be tested, those claims remain speculation.

What we can say with confidence is that Xbox Series S is part of the officially announced GTA VI console lineup.

Is GTA 6 30 FPS, or could it run at 60 FPS?

Based on the available evidence, 30 FPS is currently the best-supported expectation for GTA VI on consoles.

Two important pieces of evidence now point in the same direction:

  1. Flow Games reports that Rob Nelson described current console builds as running at 30 FPS.
  2. Digital Foundry found the PS5 Extended Look footage running at 30 FPS.

That is much stronger evidence than simply counting frames in an old trailer.

But Rockstar still has not released a final performance-mode table.

A late performance mode, a platform-specific mode or a post-launch update therefore cannot be completely ruled out.

The safest summary as of September 2026 is:

30 FPS is supported by current development and footage evidence. 60 FPS is not currently confirmed.

What does the GTA 6 Extended Look tell us about FPS?

Rockstar confirms that the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.

That makes it much more useful for performance analysis than a cinematic trailer.

Digital Foundry examined the footage and identified it as running at 30 FPS. Its analysis also covered lighting, ray tracing, simulation and image quality.

That tells us something meaningful about the current PS5 presentation.

It does not tell us every graphics mode that might exist in the final November release.

For that, Rockstar would need to publish the available modes or the retail game would need to be tested directly.

Resolution, PSSR and your TV: what not to confuse with FPS

Resolution and frame rate describe different parts of a game's presentation.

A game can output a 4K image without rendering every frame internally at native 3840 × 2160. Modern games frequently use reconstruction and upscaling to produce a higher-resolution final image from a lower internal resolution.

Technical analysis of the GTA VI Extended Look has also discussed reconstructed image quality and an internal resolution in the region of 1440p. These are analyst estimates based on the released footage, not Rockstar's official PS5 resolution specification.

PSSR performs image reconstruction on PS5 Pro.

It should not be confused with frame generation, which creates additional frames between conventionally rendered ones.

Likewise, a 120 Hz television does not automatically make a 30 FPS or 60 FPS game render at 120 FPS.

VRR can help a compatible display synchronize its refresh behavior with a game's frame delivery, but it does not create a higher native frame-rate mode by itself.

In short:

  • resolution affects image detail
  • upscaling/reconstruction affects how that image is produced
  • frame rate describes how frequently new frames are rendered
  • refresh rate describes how frequently the display can refresh

They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Does GTA V at 60 FPS tell us anything about GTA VI?

Only as historical context.

When GTA V launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022, Rockstar provided clear graphics-mode information.

On PS5, Sony described:

  • Fidelity Mode targeting 30 FPS
  • Performance Mode targeting 60 FPS
  • Performance RT Mode targeting 60 FPS

That is useful because it shows what an official Rockstar performance announcement looks like.

It does not mean GTA VI will use the same modes.

GTA VI is a different game with a substantially more complex open world, rendering workload and simulation.

The important question is therefore not whether Rockstar has shipped 60 FPS Grand Theft Auto games before.

It is whether Rockstar announces a 60 FPS GTA VI mode for the console you plan to use.
